Nine people were killed and dozens injured in a mass shooting that targeted a secondary school and a residence in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, on February 10th.

The attack took place in the remote mountain valley town in the foothills of the Rockies. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), 27 people were wounded. Two suffered serious injuries, while 25 sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said an alert was issued about an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on Tuesday afternoon. As officers searched the school, they discovered six people who had been shot dead. A seventh victim with a gunshot wound died while being transported to hospital.

Authorities later found two additional bodies at a premises in Tumbler Ridge. Police said the residence is “believed to be connected to the incident.”

At the school, officers located an “individual believed to be the shooter”, deceased with what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury. The RCMP declined to release details regarding the suspect’s identity. Canadian media have reported that the shooter was female.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” by the “horrific acts of violence” and announced he would suspend plans to travel to the Munich Security Conference.

The municipality of Tumbler Ridge said in a statement that “there are no words sufficient for the heartbreak our community is experiencing tonight.” Police have not released information about the ages of the victims or the suspect.
