Copenhagen is investing billions to strengthen Arctic defence, responding to U.S. concerns about Greenland’s security.

Denmark will invest 27.4 billion crowns ($4.26 billion) to strengthen its military presence in the Arctic. The plan includes two new Arctic ships, drones, radar systems and a new military headquarters in Nuuk, Greenland.

The country will also buy 16 more F-35 fighter jets, worth 29 billion crowns, in addition to the 27 already ordered. Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said these steps are needed as war has returned to Europe.

The move follows U.S. criticism that Denmark has neglected Greenland’s defence. The U.S. has a permanent base there, while Denmark’s local forces still include old ships and dog sled patrols.
