NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will be meeting with the Danish defence minister as the alliance is planning “next steps” to bolster Arctic security.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen announced on Tuesday, January 13th that he and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt will meet with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House on Wednesday.

The meeting will take place after U.S. president Donald Trump once again raised the prospect of the United States acquiring Greenland, saying on Sunday that Washington would take the territory “one way or the other.”

Speaking to reporters in Copenhagen, Rasmussen said that he and his Greenlandic counterpart Vivian Motzfeldt had requested a meeting with Rubio, and Vance had asked to “take part in that meeting and will host it.”

“Our reason for requesting the meeting has been to move the entire discussion .. .into a meeting room, where you can look each other in the eye and talk through these issues,” Rasmussen said.

Meanwhile Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said he would be meeting with NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte on Monday to discuss Arctic security, also together with Motzfeldt. Rutte confirmed that NATO is working on “next steps” to strengthen the alliance’s presence in the Arctic region.
