The Dutch parliament has approved plans by foreign affairs minister David van Weel to deploy extra military resources to Greenland under the auspices of NATO. The move reflects growing European concern over security in the Arctic.

The proposal, introduced by the orthodox Christian SGP party, calls for the Netherlands to join other European NATO members in increasing their military presence on the island. Van Weel said Washington’s concerns about the region’s security were justified and confirmed Dutch willingness to participate in a collective defence mission.

The decision comes after Donald Trump renewed calls for American control of Greenland to counter Russian and Chinese influence—a proposal rejected by Denmark and Greenland’s governments alike.
