A 28-year-old Syrian-born man living in the Netherlands has been arrested on terrorism charges after allegedly using the social media app Clubhouse to express support for the Islamic State (IS), Dutch authorities announced on Thursday, June 5th. The suspect was taken into custody earlier this week and has been admitted to jail following an initial hearing.

According to the Public Prosecution Service (OM), the man acted as a moderator in several Clubhouse discussion groups that praised IS and disseminated pro-terrorist views. “The suspect was born in Syria and has been living in the Netherlands for some time,” the OM said in a statement.

The investigation was triggered by intelligence provided by the Dutch domestic security service AIVD and was carried out by a national police unit. Authorities arrested the man on Tuesday and seized multiple electronic devices, including laptops and mobile phones, which are now subject to forensic examination.
