The Dutch government has earmarked €5.7 million to cover likely insurance costs following the dramatic theft of a 2,500-year-old Romanian gold helmet from the Drents Museum in January.

The Helmet of Cotofenesti and three gold bracelets were stolen when a gang broke into the museum using firework bombs to destroy display cases. The artefacts, considered national treasures in Romania, have yet to be recovered.

A Dutch culture ministry spokesperson said the funds were part of a state indemnity scheme that encourages museums to display valuable works by offering theft coverage.

Two suspects recently appeared in court, and authorities believe the items may still be intact.

The ministry said it hopes the treasures will be found, which would allow the state to reclaim its payout.

A €100,000 reward remains on offer for information leading to the stolen helmet’s recovery.
