Summer hasn’t even begun but the German city of Hanover has already issued a warning to its citizens that water usage will be restricted from the beginning of June to the end of September if temperatures rise above 27 degrees Celsius.
Inhabitants of Hanover as well as a further 21 municipalities in the region will not be allowed to water their lawns and gardens during the day (between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.)
Any person caught repeatedly violating the regulation could face a fine of up to a whopping €50,000.
The ban also applies to parks, agricultural fields, forests as well as sports facilities (football pitches, golf and tennis courts).
The restrictions have been in force for the past two years, and the head of the environmental department, Jens Palandt said they were “an important part of our water strategy, so that there is enough water for everyone in the coming decades.”
