Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al–Sisi praised President Donald Trump’s U.S.–backed Gaza plan on Monday, October 6th, as negotiators from Hamas, Israel and the U.S. converged on Egypt to discuss a hostage–prisoner exchange and ceasefire.
The president said in an address marking the 1973 war between Israel and Egypt:
I can only extend my praise and appreciation for U.S. President Donald Trump for his initiative that seeks a ceasefire in Gaza after two years of war, killing and destruction.
President al–Sisi also emphasized that a ceasefire, the return of prisoners, the reconstruction of Gaza, and the initiation of a political process aimed at establishing and recognizing a Palestinian state would represent a crucial step toward lasting peace and regional stability.
The Yom Kippur War paved the way to the Camp David Accords in 1979, which saw Egypt become the first Arab country to establish formal ties with Israel. Since the outbreak of the conflict, Egypt has served as a key mediator between Hamas and Israel, coordinating closely with Qatar and the U.S. to advance dialogue and negotiations.
