The French president called on the U.S. to pressure Israel into halting the fighting and securing hostage releases from Gaza.

U.S. president Donald Trump could only win the Nobel Peace Prize if he stopped what he sees as the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians over Gaza, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday, September 23:

I see a U.S. president who is active, who wants peace, who wants the Nobel Peace Prize. But the Nobel Peace Prize is possible only if you stop this war.

You must put pressure on the government of Israel so that they stop this war and obtain the release of the 48 [Hamas-held] hostages.

During his address to the United Nations earlier Tuesday, Trump repeated his claim that he had ended seven unending wars and acknowledged that certain voices argued that he “should get the Nobel Peace Prize.”

President Macron’s remarks came amid tensions with the U.S. and Israel, sparked by a French push at this week’s annual UN gathering for Western nations to recognize a Palestinian state.

On Monday, September 22, Macron himself recognized the State of Palestine, after the UK, Australia and Canada made the same move, prompting Trump to slam such recognition as “a reward for these horrible atrocities, including October 7.”
