Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called for a “limited ceasefire” focused on halting attacks on ports and energy facilities in the Russia-Ukraine war during personal talks with Russian president Vladimir Putin on Friday.
Speaking on the sidelines of a summit in Turkmenistan, Erdoğan said that any effort to end the conflict was valuable, adding that “implementing a limited ceasefire, targeting energy facilities and ports in particular, could be beneficial,” according to a readout from his office.
His remarks followed a series of recent attacks on Russia-linked tankers in the Black Sea, including several drone strikes claimed by Kyiv.
During a press briefing in Kyiv on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Turkey was working on a proposal for a ceasefire specifically related to energy infrastructure and shipping.
“President Erdoğan mentioned this to me. I told him we would support it. He wants to organise a corresponding meeting–first at the team level, then between leaders. I told him we are ready.”
