Sweden Democrat MEP Beatrice Timgren has taken to X, formerly Twitter, to call European Union bottle top requirements “a TOTAL disaster!”:
More plastic waste in nature since it was introduced. The Sweden Democrats demand that the EU scrap this mess.
The call for action follows reports that the changes to drinks bottles are leading to more litter and pollution, notably a tripling in the total number of plastic caps found on Sweden’s West Coast beaches.
Ten months after Brussels introduced legislation banning the sale of plastic bottles without tethered lids, Timgren’s party would gladly scrap the “stupid” requirement for plastic caps, with the MEP taking to social media to declare:
The EU’s micromanagement was supposed to save the world. But as is often the case when the EU means well, the result is the opposite.
Since the EU requirement came into effect, the number of plastic caps in nature has tripled, according to data from Keep Sweden Tidy.
The Sweden Democrats are now taking parliamentary action to have the EU requirement revoked.
