The EU’s foreign chief, Kaja Kallas, said Europe will defend its interests, coinciding with renewed U.S.–Israeli strikes.

The EU has approved new sanctions on 19 Iranian officials and entities, its foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said on Wednesday, citing “serious human rights violations” during Tehran’s deadly crackdown on mass protests. However, Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was not among those hit by the measures, according to diplomatic sources.

Kallas stated “As the war in Iran continues, the EU will protect its interests and pursue those responsible for domestic repression.”

While Europe ramps up this diplomatic and economic pressure, the military situation on the ground remains equally intense. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Wednesday that the joint bombing campaign with the U.S. against Iran would go on “as long as necessary,” insisting the strikes had inflicted heavy casualties on Tehran’s forces.
