Iratxe García MEP, leader of the S&D group in the European Parliament (EP), spoke in Washington on Wednesday, June 4th, to argue that the unity of the Left—i.e. her EP group and U.S. democrats—is more important than ever.
The Spanish MEP’s delegation had meetings scheduled throughout the week with leftist U.S. lawmakers, including Bernie Sanders and Nancy Pelosi, and representatives of multilateral organisations such as the World Bank. The socialists’ opposition to President Donald Trump and his allies in Europe was spelled out by Garcia, who declared
We see these alliances between Trump and far-right leaders in Europe, like [Hungary’s Viktor] Orbán, for example, and this clearly shows us that today more than ever, the unity of democrats and progressives is needed for a different vision in these transatlantic relations,
Whereas the S&D group has a long history of complaining of foreign—mostly Russian—interference in Brussels when it doesn’t get its own way, it is happy to get involved in U.S. politics.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the MEP posted praise for:
Speaker Pelosi [who] taught us that dignity has a voice, and that courage belongs at the highest table of power.
She didn’t just break ceilings, she opened doors for others to rise.
Your leadership remains a beacon of strength, inspiring us to ensure that autocracy and regression are defeated by democracy and progress.
Garcia will also use this trip to help pave the way for the European Commission’s pact between the EU member states and Mercosur.
