EU countries on Tuesday, May 20th, gave a green light to lifting all economic sanctions on Syria in a bid to help the war-torn country recover after the ouster of Bashar al-Assad.

The decision from the European Union comes after U.S. President Donald Trump announced last week that Washington was lifting its sanctions against Syria.

EU diplomats said the agreement should see the end of sanctions cutting Syrian banks off from the global system and freezing central bank assets.

The move is more than controversial, given that Syria’s new president is a former terrorist, and Islamist fighters have been involved in the massacre of thousands of Christians and Alawites in recent months.

Syria’s foreign minister said that the lifting of sanctions on his country showed an “international will” to support Damascus.

“The plan today is to benefit from the lifting of sanctions. Anyone who wants to invest in Syria, the doors are open; anyone who wants to cooperate with Syria, there are no sanctions,” he added.
