Trump signals tougher sanctions as Zelensky urges Europe to halt all Russian energy imports.

European leaders will travel to the United States in the coming days to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday.

“Certain European leaders are coming over to our country individually,” Trump told reporters, without naming them. He added that he planned to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon and signaled that tougher sanctions on Moscow could follow.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the prospect of new U.S. measures and urged Europe to completely halt purchases of Russian energy. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, it has earned nearly $1 trillion from oil and gas exports, with China and India the biggest buyers.

The United States is pressing EU countries to support secondary sanctions on nations that continue trading with Russia, hoping to cut off Moscow’s revenues and force Putin to negotiate.
