Brussels officials demand clarity following Trump proposals of a new 15% global tariff.

Monday, February 23rd saw the European Parliament (EP) stall a central trade deal with the U.S., while demanding clarity—after a Supreme Court ruling struck down some of President Donald Trump’s previously imposed tariffs.

The move came as Trump warned that countries seeking to “play games” with tariffs risked facing significantly higher duties.

Uncertainty has gripped markets since the Supreme Court ruled on Friday that Trump does not have the authority to impose tariffs under a 1977 law he had relied on. Trump responded to the decision by imposing a new 15% global tariff based on a different legal framework.

That new threat raised concern in Brussels over its potential consequences for the U.S. trade deal struck last July, as European Union officials and EP lawmakers say goods from Europe could face higher duties than those secured under the terms of the earlier agreement.
