A former American embassy employee in Oslo has been jailed for spying for Russia and Iran.

A Norwegian court has sentenced a 28-year-old former U.S. embassy security guard to three years and seven months in prison after he was caught spying for Russia and Iran.

Between March and November 2024, the man provided floorplans, personal details of embassy staff and their families, and other information, receiving €10,000 and 0.17 bitcoin from the Russian and Iranian intelligence services respectively.

The Oslo court said the information could have been used for “direct actions and physical attacks” and noted the accused knew it could harm U.S. security interests.

The defendant admitted his actions, claiming they were a protest against U.S. support for Israel in Gaza but denied aggravated espionage.

Norwegian intelligence regularly identifies Russia, Iran and China as the main foreign intelligence threats in the country.
