French President Emmanuel Macron has 48 hours to appoint a new prime minister, following Sebastien Lecornu’s resignation.
The Élysée Palace confirmed that the decision will be announced by the evening of Friday, October 10th.
Lecornu—who resigned after less than a month in office—was unable to break the parliamentary deadlock over France’s austerity budget. He has called for the appointment of a new premier rather than early elections, describing it as the best way to restore stability.
France has struggled to maintain political balance since Macron’s party lost its majority, with two former prime ministers voted out by parliament. Rassemblement National leader Marine Le Pen, who continues to gain public support ahead of the 2027 presidential election, reiterated her commitment to standing firm against what she views as ineffective government policies.
Unless Lecornu is reappointed, he will be replaced by what would be Macron’s eighth prime minister since 2017.
