Frankfurt is contemplating installing rain-protected seating areas for drug users.

To improve conditions at Frankfurt Central Station, the city plans to add covered seating for drug users.

Leopold Born, General Secretary of the Hesse CDU, has criticized the planned umbrella-covered “mushroom seating” near a drug consumption room in Frankfurt’s train station area. He said drug addicts need support to recover, not things that make it easier to keep using.

Frankfurt City Councilor Yannick Schwander also warned that the covered seating areas are being misused. According to the CDU district vice-chairman, drug users are turning them into “new recreational spaces.”
