A French teaching assistant stabbed on Tuesday by a pupil outside a school in Nogent in the Haute-Marne département of eastern France has died of her wounds, a source close to the investigation told AFP.

The secondary school student was arrested after attacking the 31-year-old assistant with a knife during a bag search.

President Emmanuel Macron condemned the “senseless wave of violence” plaguing France following the fatal stabbing.

Reports of bladed weapons in schools jumped by 15% in 2024, according to French government figures released in February. The education ministry said 6,000 checks in schools resulted in the seizure of 186 knives between March 26 and May 23.

Rassemblement National leader Marine Le Pen denounced what she called the “normalisation of extreme violence, encouraged by the apathy of the authorities.” She said on X “Not a week goes by without a tragedy striking a school,” adding

The French people have had enough and are waiting for a firm, uncompromising and determined political response to the scourge of juvenile violence.
