At the opening of the G20 summit on Saturday, member states adopted a declaration that calls for a “just, comprehensive, and lasting peace” in Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and the “occupied Palestinian territories.” The virtue-signalling declaration also calls for tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency improvements by 2030, and urges wealthier nations to increase funding for climate resilience in developing countries.Among the signatories were European leaders, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Immediately after the opening ceremony, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz rushed to a meeting to discuss Donald Trump’s Ukraine plan.

The meeting was soon expanded to include other European leaders, as well as leaders from Australia, Canada, and Japan.

This year’s summit—the first ever held on the African continent—is boycotted by the U.S., with the Trump administration calling the adoption of the declaration in America’s absence “shameful.”
