Germany’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday, October 19th that it would recall its ambassador to Georgia ahead of a meeting of European Union officials on Monday as relations fray between the Brussels bloc and its potential member in the South Caucasus.
The German Foreign Ministry posted on X:
For many months, the Georgian leadership has been agitating against the EU, Germany and personally against the German ambassador, Ernst Peter Fischer.
The recall is “for consultations on how to proceed,” the ministry added, noting that the EU Foreign Affairs Council will discuss Georgia at its meeting on Monday.
However, last month, Georgia’s Foreign Ministry summoned Ambassador Fischer, alleging that he had been involved in promoting a “radical agenda” ahead of the country’s municipal elections. Georgian officials have also accused Fischer and other EU diplomats of interfering in internal affairs and supporting efforts to destabilize the right–wing government in Tbilisi.
