Unless things change, the EU may as well be a "province of China," according to a leading industrialist.

Stefan Scherer, head of AMG Lithium, has warned that Europe lacks self-sufficiency in many key raw materials and new technologies. Instead, China is filling the gap.

In a lengthy interview, Scherer points to the way mobile telephony and wind turbines, among other strategic products, rely too heavily on firms that are loyal to Beijing. He claims it is necessary for the European Commission to step in and protect industries such as his from unfair competition.

Perhaps heeding such advice about Chinese interests sooner would have spared Brussels the embarrassment of ‘Huweigate’.
