Germany’s Alexander Dobrindt has proposed teaching older school students about crisis and war preparedness. The Interior Minister suggested a double lesson per school year, covering potential threat escalation and practical countermeasures—emphasizing that children can bring this knowledge home to their families.
Dobrindt also announced a new civil protection plan, including functioning warning systems, shelters and guidance on essential supplies such as flashlights, batteries and hand-cranked radios.
The proposal has sparked controversy. The Left Party criticized it as scaremongering while Alternative für Deutschland accused the minister of warmongering. The Greens, however, welcomed the initiative as a way to educate young people on self-help and crisis response.
Dobrindt hopes the topic will be discussed at the upcoming conference of federal and state interior ministers in Bremen in December.
