Officials in Germany’s Interior Ministry are challenging a 2022 rule allowing rainbow flags on federal buildings, arguing it politicises state symbols and weakens their authority.

Germany’s Interior Ministry leadership aims to end the right to fly rainbow flags on federal buildings, with officials calling the practice ‘political’ and inappropriate for state institutions.

The rule allowing the LGBT symbol was introduced by former minister Nancy Faeser in 2022 but critics say it undermines national symbols and creates “a chaotic situation.”

Under the new conservative leadership of Alexander Dobrindt, ministry officials want to review the flag decree to prevent special permissions for political or activist flags in the future, stressing that only official state symbols should represent Germany.

Previously, the German Chancellor declared that the Bundestag is “not a circus tent where any flag could be hoisted.”
