German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has voiced support for reintroducing a new form of compulsory military service to help strengthen the country’s armed forces. Although Germany ended conscription in 2011, it remains permitted under the constitution and could be reinstated through a parliamentary vote.
Steinmeier said it is time to revisit the issue, citing shifts in Europe’s security environment due to Russia’s war in Ukraine and changes in the U.S. government’s approach to transatlantic relations.
Introducing mandatory service for both men and women would require a constitutional amendment.
The German government, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, has committed to promoting voluntary military service as part of its coalition agreement.
