The new German government has signalled to Paris that it will no longer block French efforts to ensure nuclear power is treated on par with renewable energy in EU legislation, according to French and German officials who spoke to the Financial Times.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has been critical of his country’s decision to exit nuclear energy, which he said was depriving Germany of cheap and reliable electricity.

While he does not plan to reopen conventional nuclear power stations, he has vowed to invest in new technologies, including small modular reactors and nuclear fusion.

Commenting on the latest revelations, the Hungarian prime minister’s political adviser Balázs Orbán said the news is “great,” but for the past ten years or more Germany had “tried to drag Europe along with them with all the political pressure.”

Member state interests, rational arguments, record high costs, none of that mattered. We experienced the same thing with the issue of migration.

According to Balázs Orbán, “sensible proposals should be considered at the outset—let’s not waste years and resources only to end up realizing they were wrong again, this time on issues like ending the war or Ukraine’s EU accession.”
