Germany will collaborate with Jordan to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza by air, Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced Monday, July 28th, following Israel’s promise to open secure corridors for relief deliveries.
“Defense Minister Boris Pistorius will coordinate this very closely with France and the United Kingdom, which are also prepared to conduct such an airlift for food and medical supplies,” Merz said.
“We know that this can only be a very small help for the people in Gaza, but nevertheless it is a contribution that we will gladly make,” Merz stated. He is scheduled to host Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Berlin on Tuesday to further discuss the humanitarian response.
Germany is also taking steps on the diplomatic front. Merz announced that Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul will travel to the Middle East on Thursday to support efforts aimed at brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Over the weekend, Israel responded to growing international pressure by announcing a daily “tactical pause” in certain areas of Gaza to allow for aid delivery. On Monday, trucks carrying food began arriving in the territory, but humanitarian groups stressed that far more assistance was urgently needed to prevent famine.
