A gunman has opened fire on a group of tourists in Kashmir, killing and injuring multiple people. According to one senior police officer on the scene, “At least 24 people have been killed,” but no official numbers have yet been released.
Omar Abdullah, the Indian-administered region’s chief minister, told reporters that the attack was “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years”.
The perpetrators would “be brought to justice”, said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He continued in his social media post: “Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakeable and it will get even stronger.”
No one has been arrested yet, and no group has taken responsibility for the attack. However, it is believed that the violence is related to the long-running conflict over Kashmir, which is claimed by both India and Pakistan. According to video footage and witnesses, the gunman appeared to be targeting non-Muslims specifically.
