Authorities say only a limited number of sensitive files were taken, despite hackers claiming access to millions of police records.

France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed on Wednesday that hackers broke into Interior Ministry systems and accessed sensitive police databases, including criminal records and the wanted persons file.

Speaking to France Info, Nuñez said a “group of individuals” managed to consult “a certain number of files important to us,” including the judicial records database (TAJ) and the wanted persons register (FPR).

Hackers have claimed they accessed data relating to up to 16.4 million people, though Nuñez said the scale of the breach remains unclear and that only “a few dozen files” are known to have been extracted so far. An investigation has been opened to identify those responsible. Nuñez insisted the breach does not endanger public safety.
