There’s so far no evidence of a political motive behind the knife attack at the main Hamburg train station Friday night when a 39-year-old woman started indiscriminately stabbing people waiting at platform 13/14. According to media reports, the woman is German and could have suffered some kind of mental episode. After the attack, she did not resist arrest.
Police spokesman Florian Abbenseth told Hamburger Abendblatt that police have “information that we are now using to determine whether she may have been in a state of psychological distress.” The Hamburg Homicide Squad has reportedly taken over the investigation.
Four people are said to be in critical condition, six seriously injured, and seven slightly injured, but police pointed out that they still have no definite numbers when it comes to victims.
A Red Cross crisis intervention team is on site and Hamburg police have opened a phone line for family members of victims.
