Belgian security forces bugged a corporate hospitality box to listen in on European Parliament (EP) representatives under alleged foreign influence.

Targeting facilities at the RSC Anderlecht football stadium, state agents ran a sophisticated surveillance operation which also went inside a leading lobbyist’s car. The accumulated evidence informed the decision, reported late on Monday, May 19th, to strip five MEPs suspected of wrongdoing of their EP immunity.

Huawei’s private box in Anderlecht’s Constant Vanden Stock Stadium in southwest Brussels cost about €50,000 for the 2024/25 season. While MEPs using the facility have denied any wrongdoing, the Huaweigate scandal continues to be an ongoing source of embarrassment for the EP.
