A top official from Huawei in Europe has emerged as a suspect in the Belgian investigation regarding the corruption scandal involving members of the European Parliament.
The senior executive was represented in a Belgian court on Tuesday, April 8th, according to Politico.
He is charged with corruption, participation in a criminal organisation, and money laundering.
Identified as Yong J., the man is listed as a vice president for the Europe region at Huawei and previously held the position of chief representative to the EU, leading the firm’s public affairs office in Brussels.
Three other employees of the Chinese tech giant are also among the suspects in the corruption probe.
Belgian prosecutors are investigating whether Huawei bribed eight MEPs in 2021 to obtain an open letter of support related to 5G technology. Six of the MEPs belong to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s centre-right EPP group and two to the socialist S&D group. No charges have been filed against the MEPs for now.
