U.S. President Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky said they hoped Monday’s gathering would eventually lead to three-way talks with Vladimir Putin.
In a post late on Monday, Trump confirmed he had spoken with Putin and started arranging a meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian presidents, to be followed by a trilateral summit.
While the Kremlin has not publicly confirmed it, a senior Trump administration official said the meeting could take place in Hungary, within the next two weeks.
This would be the first direct encounter between the leaders of the warring countries in years: the last direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine were held in Turkey in June 2022.
