During a call with his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Szíjjártó praised Russia for pursuing diplomacy with Washington despite Western Europe's push for escalation.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has emphasized his country’s pro-peace stance and commitment to energy cooperation with Russia, during a phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday, June 2nd.

“Hungary will not abandon its pro-peace position, and we won’t give up energy cooperation with the Russians, and we will continue to support Donald Trump’s peace plan,” Szijjártó stated.

He also pointed to renewed communication between Washington and Moscow. “This is reassuring news for Hungary since we in central Europe very well know that when Americans and Russians are in direct contact, the risk of escalation is lower,” he said. He further encouraged Lavrov to maintain dialogue with the U.S. administration. “It seems there’s intent on both sides to do this,” he added.

“Many people had tried to persuade the Russian government to withdraw from today’s talks in Istanbul,” Szijjártó said, adding that he welcomed Lavrov’s continued engagement.

He also criticized what he described as a divide within NATO, contrasting peace-seeking leaders like Donald Trump with Western European governments such as Germany and France that “want the war to continue.” This division, he warned, complicates the path to peace.
