Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stopped oil transit for political reasons.

Hungary and Slovakia have turned to the European Commission to enforce the rule permitting both countries to purchase Russian crude oil via maritime delivery if pipeline supplies are obstructed, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced in Budapest.

He stated that the Ukrainian president had decided not to restart oil transit toward Hungary in order to support the main opposition Tisza Party ahead of the parliamentary elections. The minister insisted the intention of the Ukrainian president is to create an oil supply crisis in Hungary.

Szijjártó said in a statement:

“Hungary has sufficient reserves for more than three months. At the same time, we are making use of the European Union rule under which Hungary and Slovakia may also purchase Russian crude oil by sea if pipeline deliveries encounter obstacles.”
