Ireland’s leading newspaper, considered a newspaper of record for Ireland, is accused of having a problem with Jews. Whereas its coverage of Israel since the October 7th pogrom has been at best equivocal, it is claimed that recent events have skewed the newspaper’s content even closer to Hamas.
Attention has been drawn to a piece asking “why are [Irish rappers] Kneecap facing consequences when Israel is not?” Journalist Laura Perrins points out that a member of the group is accused of displaying a Hezbollah flag at a London performance—a proscribed organisation in the UK—whereas “Israel are [sic] waging a just war having been attacked on Oct 7th.”
It gets worse. Commenting on the murders of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, Irish Times contributor Una Mullally says:
it is not a surprise to see violence erupt. It is never justified, and it is wrong. But there is a degree to which there is a terrible inevitability about it .. The lack of a concerted international effort to stop what Israel is doing in Gaza has frustrated those protesting and advocating for peace and freedom who are quietly screaming: catch up, do something.
Killing Jews is inevitable and not surprising, while protestors are obliged to ‘do something’ to match their quiet ‘screaming’. Little wonder that concern is growing about antisemitism in Ireland.
