Rome prepares to push for a suspension of the Brussels carbon market, citing the potential for rising electricity prices.

Italy is once again challenging the European Union’s green transition, pushing for an overhaul of the bloc’s carbon trading scheme and changing the way the tool operates to help cut electricity bills.

On Thursday, March 5th Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for the EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) to be suspended pending further reform.

Italy specifically wants to propose suspending the ETS system amid the risk of a surge in energy prices.

The move marks the latest effort by Italy to reshape the EU’s green agenda, following a successful campaign to get Brussels to push back a landmark 2035 ban on new petrol and diesel cars.
