Authorities face calls to act after neo-Nazi slogans defaced a Lisbon Jewish memorial and “Free Palestine” was spray-painted on a Brussels nativity scene.

A monument in Lisbon commemorating Jews killed during a 1506 massacre was defaced last week with neo-Nazi slogans, including with a reference to Adolf Hitler.

The Star of David-shaped statue outside a central church was marked with “Haltz Judeu 1488,” prompting condemnation from the Jewish Community of Lisbon. David Joffe Botelho, president of the Lisbon Jewish Community, urged authorities to take proactive measures against rising antisemitism, calling for the restoration of the monument and swift punishment of those responsible.

Another incident occurred in Brussels when a nativity scene in the city’s Grand-Palace was spray-painted with the words “Free Palestine” on Saturday, December 6th, raising concerns of anti-Christian vandalism.

A spokesperson for the Combat Antisemitism Movement highlighted the broader threat to religious symbols across Europe.
