A man opened fire in an Albanian courtroom killing the judge and injuring two other people.

An Albanian judge was presiding over a Monday, October 6th hearing at the court of appeal when a man on trial opened fire. Judge Astrit Kalaja was immediately rushed to hospital but succumbed to his wounds.

A father and son involved in the trial were also wounded but are now in stable condition. The case reportedly stemmed from a property dispute. Prime Minister Edi Rama called the shooting a “tragic event” and urged harsher penalties for gun crimes.

According to local media, the 30-year-old suspect opened fire because he knew he would lose the case.
