EU foreign policy chief says Moscow has made “not one compromise”

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has warned that pushing Ukraine to hand over territory risks playing into Vladimir Putin’s hands. She accused the Kremlin leader of showing no willingness to stop the war, saying he was “laughing” at Western efforts for peace while stepping up the bombardment.

Speaking to the BBC, the Estonian politician rejected proposals for land concessions, noting that Moscow has not offered “a single compromise.” She said any agreement must be built on durable security guarantees for Kyiv, with the United States directly involved.

Her remarks followed Donald Trump’s recent meeting with Putin in Alaska, after which the U.S. president hosted Volodymyr Zelensky and senior EU figures in Washington. Trump has kept open the possibility of sending American peacekeepers.

Kallas also pressed for tougher economic measures, pointing to U.S. sanctions as vital, and confirmed that the EU is finalising its 19th package of penalties on Russia.
