Kazakhstan’s parliament has approved a bill banning the public and media promotion of “non-traditional sexual orientation,” closely resembling Russia’s anti-LGBT laws. The measure still needs approval from its upper house.
Rights groups condemned the bill as discriminatory, warning it would further harm LGBT people and violate Kazakhstan’s international human rights obligations.
The move comes as President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev visits Moscow to deepen ties with Vladimir Putin. Tokayev has previously criticized the spread of “LGBT values,” echoing Russian claims that they are part of Western interference. Russia passed a similar law in 2013 and expanded it in 2022.
