A Russian guided bomb strike on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv overnight left six people injured and ignited several fires, regional officials reported on Wednesday, October 1.
According to Oleh Synehubov, governor of the wider Kharkiv region, five of the injured—all adults—were taken to hospital. Kharkiv’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, said the attack also caused a blaze at a city market and in some residential buildings. Photos and videos showed firefighters working through the night as flames consumed market stalls and other nearby structures.
Located close to the Russian border, the Kharkiv region has been subjected to frequent Russian airstrikes since the beginning of the war.
Moscow has not yet commented on the incident.
The war between Russia and Ukraine started in February 2022, triggering a bloody and destructive conflict now in its third year. Both sides deny deliberately targeting civilians, insisting their strikes are aimed at damaging infrastructure vital to the opposing side’s war effort.
