King’s College London has instructed lecturers to overlook poor grammar in an effort to “embrace linguistic diversity.” The university plans to reduce traditional exams and offer a “choice in assessment formats” to be more inclusive. Additionally, essay word limits will be shortened to prevent students from being “overburdened.”
Dr. Edward Skidelsky, director of the Committee for Academic Freedom, criticized the move:
These attempts to dumb down assessment in the name of inclusivity are being pushed by university managers against the will of academics and students who hunger for a rigorous education.
The decision has sparked backlash from undergraduates, who argue the changes fail to “provide sufficient preparation” for postgraduate or professional life.
