Several people were injured Thursday, October 2nd, when a knife-wielding driver attacked the Heaton Park synagogue in Crumpsall, Manchester, according to police.
The suspect was shot—and possibly killed—by armed officers. Police have confirmed that a car was driven toward members of the public and one man was stabbed. Four people are currently being treated for injuries caused by both the vehicle and stabbing. Police have officially described the attack as a car ramming and stabbing, reports GB News, in a ‘PLATO incident’ prompting a lockdown of local hospitals.
The attack occurred on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham—who also appeared to confirm the death of the suspect—urged people to avoid the area, adding
It’s a serious incident but the immediate danger appears to be over. The police acted quickly with remarkable support from the public and on-site security.
A North West Ambulance Service spokesperson said, “We are assessing the situation and working with other emergency services. Our priority is to ensure people receive medical help as quickly as possible.”
While the attacker’s motivation is currently unknown, commentators are linking it to the recent rapid growth of antisemitism in Britain.
