Political deadlock has pushed Kosovo’s president to call new elections for December 28, the second vote in less than a year.

Kosovo will return to the polls for the second time in less than a year after its parliament failed to elect a government, the country’s president announced on Thursday, November 20.

President Vjosa Osmani told reporters at a press conference in the capital, Pristina:

December 28 is the date that I have assessed as the only remaining possible option.

On Wednesday, outgoing Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s party—which topped February’s poll but failed to win a majority—lost the parliamentary vote to install its preferred leader, the final attempt allowed under the constitution before snap elections must be called.

Kurti has remained as caretaker prime minister for months, as a polarized parliament delayed key votes necessary for forming a government.
