Latvia has completed construction of a physical fence along its entire border with Russia, a move authorities say will strengthen national security and reinforce the European Union’s external frontier.
The Latvian state real estate agency said the barrier extends for around 280 kilometres along the Latvian-Russian border, creating a continuous obstacle in areas where terrain allows.
Latvia has also strengthened its southern frontier. By mid-2024, a 145-kilometre fence had been completed along the border with Belarus, as part of broader efforts to secure the country’s eastern boundaries.
The fencing projects form part of wider measures to reinforce Latvia’s borders and those of the European Union, amid heightened security concerns in the region.
Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis said completing the fence along the Russian border marked an important step in strengthening both national and regional security, adding that further upgrades—including advanced surveillance systems and additional technology—are planned in the coming years.
