On Wednesday, September 17th, Latvia’s State Security Service (VDD) announced that it had arrested a Latvian citizen suspected of spying for neighboring Russia.
The VDD claims that the alleged spy provided his Moscow handlers with details of the locations and security measures of Latvian and allied NATO troops on Latvian soil:
According to information at VDD’s disposal, the male has also shared other information with the Russian intelligence and security service which could be used against the national security interests of Latvia and other Baltic region states.
The suspect—not yet publicly named—has been in custody since late August. With a criminal investigation still ongoing, four properties to date have been searched.
Latvia and its fellow Baltic states have been NATO members since 2004 and are strong supporters of Ukraine in its defensive war with Russia. Tensions remain high along their eastern borders following recent alleged Russian drone incursions.
