A 53-year-old man has been charged with seven offences following a shocking incident in Liverpool earlier this week, where he rammed his car into crowds celebrating Liverpool F.C.’s Premier League title win. The incident, which took place on Monday, May 26th, left 79 people injured.
The driver, Paul Doyle, faces charges including dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm with intent, authorities confirmed on Thursday. He has been in custody and is scheduled to appear before Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Friday this week.
Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims of Merseyside Police told a press conference that seven people remained in hospital as of Thursday. While there were no fatalities, the scale of the injuries has shocked the nation.
Sarah Hammond of the Crown Prosecution Service said the agency had authorized the charges following a “complex and ongoing investigation.”
“Prosecutors and police are continuing to work at pace to review a huge volume of evidence,” she said. “This includes multiple pieces of video footage and numerous witness statements. It is important to ensure every victim gets the justice they deserve.”
