Concern about an encampment on Park Lane—once home to some of London’s most exclusive addresses—has provoked the Mayor of London into praising multiculturalism (again).
When a Londoner raised concerns about the settlement, and its adjacent street drinking and outdoor bowel movements, the official reply spoke volumes:
- migration is a “huge strength” of the capital;
- London has a tradition of welcoming migrants and providing “sanctuary to those who need it;”
- migrants and refugees “enrich our society, communities, culture and economy in myriad ways, making London a welcoming, diverse and truly global city and bringing cultural energy to Londoners’ ever-evolving shared identity.”
While this statement is from Khan’s communications team and not him directly, it was likely issued with his blessing. Both the Mayor’s office and Labour-controlled Westminster City Council—the authority directly responsible for Park Lane—have yet to take any action on the encampment itself.
As the turds pile higher, the Mayor’s reputation sinks deeper into London’s sewers.
